Day Eighteen - Peelings and Portions

Everything I use I seem to weigh these days, it's becoming second nature ... the veggies for yesterdays pan of Vegetable Stew were first weighed before being cooked.  It has it's plus side I know of course how many I'm getting of my five a day as seemingly your five a day consists of five portions of fruit or vegetables weighing 80g each.

So on this dish are almost 5.5 portions.

You should also vary the colours you eat, I'm missing red and purple here, a squirt of tomato ketchup and a few slices of beetroot would have solved that if I had any beetroot.  It's no big deal because I've read that as long as you balance things out over a few days everything should be fine.

But I'll not dash out to buy anything purple just yet!!

Nothing is wasted either ... all the peelings from yesterdays vegetables were washed, patted a bit dry and then popped into a bag in the freezer.  Along with my spinach stalks and my baby leeks I now have the makings of my final weeks pot of soup.

Just ten days left of this Challenge, it's looking hopeful for me being able to finish.  I have all the foods in the cupboard, fridge and freezer and the grand total of £4.28.

What would YOU buy with the remaining £4.28?

  1. I would definitely buy at least one tin of baked beans and maybe a large pot of yogurt to make use of mushy bananas or use in a stir fry.
Another loaf of bread will probably be needed too unless you have enough flour left to make a soda bread loaf.
That would be the £4.28 spent where we live. There are very few yellow sticker opportunities to be had.
    Are you allowed to scavenge?
We still have blackberries ripening round here and apples lying in the lane.
The blackberries are going to waste because lots of people thing they belong to the “ little folk” after the end of September but I'm not of that opinion so we've been enjoying them.
There are still plenty for the birds too because this summer and autumn were so amazing.

    1. Another tin of beans is a good idea but the idea of mushy bananas in a yoghurt is not something I fancy at all ... haha. I like my bananas either very firm in yoghurt or frozen to go in smoothies. The ones I have just bought are now chopped into chunks in the freezer and should keep me going for about six breakfast smoothies, along with the apples.

I have already bought another loaf, so hopefully this will last me for the last week and a half of the challenge. I can only eat a couple of slices a day or I have a bad reaction to it, so it should be more than enough.

I don't pick any wild fruits after the start of October as the wildlife need it more than we do, ours started to go downhill by then anyway and I have more than enough in the freezer to see us through the Winter, although I haven't used any up to now in this Challenge. Maybe next weeks 'three from home' could include some mixed berries :-) The 'little folk' story is so that children would leave it for the birds and wildlife.

  2. I'd probably go for something purple, as you said and some protein - a pack of mixed pulses to soak and cook would go a very long way and be useful; protein and fibre as well as counting towards your five a day and if you open freeze them, they are free flow so you can pour out just as much as you require. Butter beans are wonderful in soups.
Then I'd probably go YS hunting to see what's there.

    1. Yes, perhaps some vacuum packed beetroot would be good, they are pretty cheap if bought that way. I have plenty of protein left - half a dozen eggs and almost a full bag of lentils, plus protein is in every foodstuff except sugar and fat so my protein consumption never worries me.

I need to get my timing right and go on a YS hunt to finish the Challenge off with a bang :-)

    2. It's not just protein, it's a portion of F&V in a different wrapping. :-) But I take your point, all the same.

  3. Protein - maybe peanuts or peanut butter? Guessing you'll need another loaf. And I'd be missing fruit so maybe more tins and apples.

    1. Well I have more than enough protein with my eggs and lentils, I have almost a full loaf and I don't like fruit, so I'll have my smoothies and get it down me that way. I am missing peanut butter ... maybe that's a good idea for on my toast for the last week.

  4. Thanks for all the suggestions, you really got me thinking and I needed that.

Now I'm going to look through what I have and see if I can come up with a menu for the next couple of days. I do need to get organised for the last week to get the best possible use out of what I have left.

  5. CHOCOLATE and CAKE!!
(I said I'd be no good at a challenge!)

    1. Well I could buy both ... dairy free chocolate (the sort I eat) on mysupermarket.co.uk can be had from £1 per large bar and as for chocolate cake, well I could buy some Dr Oetker Dark Cocoa Powder which is on offer at the moment for just £2 a tub and I have all the other ingredients necessary to make a very good chocolate cake .... only I'm a bit strange, I don't really like chocolate cake, but if you were here I would make you one :-)

    2. Ha, I'd buy crisps and cheese! (savoury for me, I don't have much of a sweet tooth).

    3. Crisps and chilled dry white! :-)

    4. Now you've got me thinking .... PERHAPS if I can make the food I already have last until the end of the Challenge my £4.28 could be spent on a mini bottle of wine and a bag of crisps :-)

You're a naughty lot planting these seeds .....

  6. I know you don't eat meat but a small steak, potato, and something sweet for me. I would be hopeless on this challenge.

    1. Well I have just looked at a steak Alan has in the fridge and it was £3.80 from Tesco, SO you would be able to afford a potato to have as a jacket or homemade wedges to go with it, and perhaps a single yogurt or mini trifle for pud :-)
