Eating the Stores - The Freezer Challenge - 2

Shelf 1

I'm not going to list all the individual foods on the main shelves of the freezer, but hopefully on these close up shots you should be able to get a good idea of  what we have in store to use up during the next couple of weeks.

Shelf 2

This is pretty much freezer Tetris at it's messiest.

Shelf 3

The Carte D'Or ice-cream tub contains ice cubes so this will always be on this shelf which is directly above the slide out ice-cube trays.

Shelf 4

This is a good example of why things occasionally fall out when we open the door  ;-)

And this is what has been taken out of the freezer for tonight's tea.

As we are both heading back home from different places, and have both had a cooked dinner while we were at our meetings, it will be easiest to have a simple Fish Bun for a light tea once we are back home together.  Alan can eat the cheesecake over the next three nights for his desserts or suppers.  It was supposed to be eaten at Christmas but we had more than enough of fresh cakes etc so it ended up being left in the freezer.

Thanks for all the lovely comments over the past few days, and a big HELLO to those of you who have only just found me again.

  1. Your freezer looks like mine....although mine has drawers which are so full I have difficulty opening some of them. I'm trying to use up what's in ours too....although as fast as I use something and create a little space, I seem to fill it up with more homemade ready meals or cake...not very helpful lol. Well, it will be in the long run, I suppose.

    1. We have two drawers underneath these shelves and yes, like you I sometimes have difficulty opening them. I'll post photos of what's in them tomorrow.

I am determined that nothing is going INTO the freezer until this Challenge is over ... determined!!

    1. There is a lot of food!!

I think because modern efficient freezer don't require defrosting things just get left for much longer than they would have with older models ... well that's my excuse ;-)

  3. I could never keep cheesecake in the freezer - they would just shout EAT ME every time I saw them!

    1. Haha ... not so very long ago this would have been true for us too, but now I can't eat them (due to the dairy in them) and Alan is being much better with his eating to control his diabetes, so things do last a bit better.

  4. This looks like my freezer!.But as I only shop every 2/3 weeks it will be down to one shelf by then...I hope, lol. We seem to be getting through alot of veg at the min..Ive used 5 broccoli in just over a week, carrots, peas, parsnip, turnip and a couple of brussels that were kicking around the bottom of the freezer, left over from Christmas.I dont freeze my veg though because we seem to get through it quite quickly. When I shop now,I go to Aldi at 8am,because thats when they do half price on the meat and bread with that sell by date on.So as the rest of the family are meat eaters that is what is mainly in my freezer.xx

    2. Really interesting to learn that about Aldi, thank you. You do sound like you have a very healthy diet :-)

  5. It's great that you've taken items out that aren't going to multiple and have to go back into the freezer, that's what I'm trying my hardest to do. It will be interesting to see what comes out xx

    1. I am determined to do this, I feel like I should stick a big 'No Entry' sign on the door to keep me on track :-)

  6. I too have just found you again. I always greatly enjoyed your food saving blogs. I am working my way thru our freezer too. Sometimes, I'm not up on the left overs but do try.

    1. I think it's good to use up all the foods we have in stock. Even if while we do this we simply save the money ready for a big restock.

  7. Last night I took out two pieces of salmon to defrost so I will cook those tonight and have them today and tomorrow - so that will get a few more items out of the freezer!
I use plastic bins to corral everything - it's not perfect but it makes life a lot easier when I want that one particular item. I keep a large container on the bottom for the newest pieces of meat or fish. Then the ones on top of that contain those raw items to be used next and another contains portions of foods already cooked and ready just to be reheated. Another holds things portions of desserts and breads/buns and the final ones holds bits & pieces, leftover sauces, sliced lemons & limes, frozen bananas for smoothies or banana bread - that sort of thing. The door of the freezer section holds all my frozen veg. It's not a large freezer section so keeping it all contained like this is the only way that I can use it to the max.

    1. It sounds very well organised. I might do something similar for all the bitty bits and find a nice box or a couple of baskets maybe, for keeping like with like.

  8. I went shopping today for just a few bits....Problem, I came home with more than a few bits. I did very well sticking to my list on my first stop, it was the second one that caused the problem. Hopefully after falling down, I pick myself up, dust myself off and start over again.

I need to do a cleanup of my upright freezer, I also have things fall out on me every so often.

    God bless.

    1. I don't know about you but I think I get into 'shopping mode' if I visit more than one shop. Once I'm in the zone I can shop and shop and shop, list or no list :-)
