Eat the Stores - The Freezer Challenge - 4

One potato

Two potato

... three potato, four.

Does anyone else remember the old school 'deciding who goes first' game ... or is it just me?

Well when I saw I had four potatoes that's exactly what came to mind.

Of course using the food out of the freezer has meant that we've also been working our way through some other non-frozen things to go with them and at the start of the week there were just four potatoes left ... now there are two!!

I keep my spuds in this old bag in the cupboard, it is dark and just about cool enough to make them last well.  The ones we have been eating were bought way back at the start of December so that's not bad going.

Of course once the potatoes run out we will have to eat the Alphabites  :-)

In the interests of wasting nothing the peelings have been saved to use in a pot full of homemade soup.

As well as the cooking water from the boiled potatoes the other night.  I think if I add these to some of the frozen vegetables from the freezer we should get a very nice pot of soup to see us through a few lunches.

Tonight's tea has not been decided yet, I should go and have a browse through the freezer for some inspiration.

  1. Oh Sue, I've got loads of potatoes as I invested £2.90 into 25kg of Tesco 29p 2.5kg x10, we are using them up. I cooked some today in my hob steamer with a bag of 5p sprouts and my last 29p Xmas Tesco cauli. We are having cauliflower cheese with mini roast potatoes and the boiled potatoes I've mashed half will be bubble n squeak with the sprouts and the other half we will have with veg and toad in the hole xx Oh I forgot to say I store my potatoes in the garage in brown paper sacks which previously had potatoes in them x

    2. I also remember 'one potato, two potato, three potato, four' etc. And so many other playground chants too. I don't think they happen nowadays.

  2. 5 potatoes, 6 Potatoes, 7 potatoes. More. Yep I remember. Counting fists and putting one behind your back on the "More".

I have to say your blog photos today are maybe not the most exciting!!!

    1. I think we're all 'of that age' :-)

We don't eat anywhere near as many potatoes as we used to. Even a bag of frozen chips can be in the freezer for a month!

  4. I remember that. We called it 'spuds'. 'Let's do spuds', we would shout before a game. We used to say 'raw'. not 'more' though.

  5. I remember that also.

I love the way you use up absolutely everything. I had never thought of using the peelings in potato soup.

    God bless.

    1. As long as you wash your potatoes before you peel them, it's easy to then pop the peelings into a bag and just drop them in the freezer. When you have lots to use up or are making any pan of soup that you will be whizzing up, it just means you can add a bit of the best potato nutrients and vitamins as they lie closest to the skin.

  6. I remember that rhyme too, I guess I'm of 'that age' too! ha ha. I had to google the alphabites. We don't have them here but we have something similar that is all cut out happy faces!

    1. Yes I knew what you meant but had to look on mysupermarket.co.uk to find out what they are called. Seemingly it's McCain 'Smiles', and Asda do 'Smiley Stars' as well ... very cute. I was amazed actually at how many different frozen potato products there are, amazing!!

  7. We didn't do that rhyme in the Midlands. We did the 'eeny meeny miny mo' one with the very politically incorrect next line that I'd be horrified to hear now. Sometimes 'political correctness' is just, well, correct. (Savannah)

    1. Yes, we did that one too, and yes thinking about it now I am mortified that one of our group, my little friend Joanna was the most gorgeous black girl. I wonder if it passed over her head as 'just another rhyme' or was the realisation there for her and as children our innocence made us miss it and any hurt caused by the rest of us.

    2. Our 'eeny meeny' rhyme didn't involve any political incorrectness at all so my mind is now boggled!
