Down to Basics -Some Purchases Made

This Challenge isn't one of deprivation and if there's something I really want or need I am more than prepared to go out and buy it.  The other day I was craving some yogurt ... so I went out and bought some and a couple of bananas to have with it.

That I happened to pass the Reduced to Clear fridge and spot a couple of vegan sausage rolls and a Red Velvet Cake was just a happy, fortuitous moment.  The Tahini and Gram flour were both needed as I have Tahini here but not at the caravan and Gram flour at the caravan but not here ... oh the problem of reaching into a cupboard expecting something to be there and then remembering that you took it away with you to your other home last week.

What a bloody pretentious problem to have!!

Oh I did enjoy my breakfast this morning though, the last of the grapes, some granola that I had in a jar in the cupboard, nuts, seeds, yogurt and a whole banana ... yummy   :-)

    1. It was, and definitely just what I needed for a change after eating porridge or toast every day for what seems like weeks.

  2. Interesting to see gram flour, I buy it quite a lot and use it to make courgette fritters and other veg fritters, also a type of pancake I love the nutty flavour it produces, but also flavour with cumin, corriander, garlic powder or onion powder. I also use tahini but only to make humous. I am now curious/nosy to know what recipes you use booth these items for? Helen S.

    1. I use them both for pretty much the same as you actually :-)

Gram flour made into a paste is a good egg substitute for little American style pancakes, sometimes with added mashed banana or any other fruits I want to use up, and yes fritters too.

Tahini is mostly used in my hummus recipes but I also drizzle it onto meals as it is, or add a bit to smoothies ... where I find peanut butter can be a bit overpowering.

  3. I have to travel to a large Morrisons to get gram flour and Tahini is nowhere to be found. I made my own today and am seriously considering try to grind my own gram flour. I do make oat flour and I made a good batch of date syrup this afternoon. I think that making my own is the way forward right now.

    1. Mine were both from Tesco, in the World Food Aisle ... or in our small stores case the World Food Shelf :-)

Oooh I've never made Date Syrup, does it work out cheaper to do and what would you add to the dates ... simply water?

    2. I chopped up a block of dates, added about 3 cups of water and brought to simmer. As they softened i gave them a squish with the potato masher. After about 20 minutes I tipped them into a cheesecloth lined sieve over a bowl, as soon as they were cool enough I squeezed as much liquid out as I could. I put that into a clean pan and reduced it by half. sticky toffee pudding and Christmas in a jar. It should last for a month in the fridge (fat chance). The pulp has had fine chopped apple stirred in with a little orange zest and will be the filling in an alternative bakewell pudding. Waste not want not. The dates cost £1 for 350 grams on offer in Tesco and I got 3/4 of jam jar of syrup. I am happy with that but I will be checking around.
