For the Price of a Coffee - Day Three - The Shopping

I went out with only half a plan in my mind … and no proper list.

I knew I wanted some ready rolled pastry, shortcrust would have been best but all they had in Aldi was Puff Pastry, so that would have to do.  At just 85p a pack it was cheaper than anywhere else.  I did toy with the idea of making my own, but buying flour and fat would have been more expensive and I don't want to be eating too many things made with flour this week as I am trying to concentrate more on vegetables.

The other things were just bargains I couldn't resist.  A lovely fresh head of broccoli for just 39p and a butternut squash for 69p.

The stuffing mix will be used to make some stuffing balls to have as a sort of roast dinner with some of the veggies, and the part baked brown baguettes will be eaten once with some dhal and once to make a salad sandwich ... after I've been shopping for some salad stuff later in the week.

My receipt, accidently crumpled and then rescued, it shows that I have overspent by 3p …. doing maths while wandering around a supermarket used to be my strong point, seemingly not so much these days!

Carried forward      12p
Todays money   £2.75
                 Total   £2.87

I spent £2.90 - which is a 3p overspend … oops, so now I have just £2.72 to spend tomorrow!

  2. I'm so impressed with what you were able to buy Sue, even with a tiny 3p overspend:) DH went to the supermarket today and for 16 items we spent $53.20, like your Canadian and USA readers prices over here are over the roof:( We have now established our little veggie plot, just one problem we have a resident bush turkey who I've called Boris only to find out she is a girl so we have renamed her Doris♥ She eats the strawberries and has dug up a few plants so far, we are happy to share with her:)

    1. What should be pointed out though is that wages are usually higher in Canada, so higher food prices tie in with this. We found this out when we almost relocated when Alan was offered a job in Canada a few years ago.

Naughty, naughty Doris, she is one very lucky turkey with her own fresh snack bar 🤣🤣

    2. Hi Sue, I've lived on the Gold Coast, Queensland in Oz since 1991 although I lived in the US for 9 years and the UK for 28 years oh dear I'm cracking on:( My son has been living in Canada for the past 2 years and is due home next month, very excited. I'm wondering if your moved to Canada would have been a temporary one? I would love to move back to the UK but with my children and grandchildren here it's very hard as I have still have a lot of my immediate family living in the UK (Glossop Derbyshire). In a perfect world 6 months in Oz and 6 months in the UK:)

    3. I wonder why I thought you lived in Canada, you must have told me you lived in Oz previously. I have no idea of the wage levels in Oz. Alan has never been offered a job there … there's no jobs in the nuclear industry in Australia!

    1. You should have seen me rooting around for the largest squash and head of broccoli, as they were priced 'each' and not by weight. I did well 😃

    1. Have a go yourself, even if it's in a small way to start with, this sort of limited spending challenge is very addictive. I love your post about your vintage sewing machine :-)

  5. I'm so pleased you are including vegetables in your restricted budget because it is possible to eat for less and still have an great element of healthy. So many people say to eat healthy you need money, I personally think you need to work a little harder on your meal plans and shopping list.

    1. It is very possible to have most or all of the recommended minimum 'five a day' if you plan carefully and can shop around a little bit. Rooting around for the largest of the broccoli heads and butternut squashes while other folk just grabbed one quickly highlighted this even more. I bet I got another of my 80g portions of each vegetable by simply taking my time with my shopping.
