For the Price of a Coffee - Day Three - The Meals

Breakfast - Bowl of Porridge

Alan had a bowl of porridge too, taken from my bag of oats hence the new lower figure in the foods carried forward column below.  I'm so pleased  that I decided to include coffee as one of my five store-cupboard items, I don't drink it excessively but around five cups a day is my normal amount  :-)

One of my many cold drinks using my morning lemon slice.  I used up the last of a bottle of sparkling water from the fridge for this one, it would have gone flat if I'd left it until the end of the Challenge … well that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

I was very generous at lunchtime and made Alan's lunch out of my supplies.  So twice the weight of pasta was weighed out.

And some of the newly bought Broccoli was added to the cooking water a couple of minutes before it was ready.

As I had been so generous sharing my spaghetti, broccoli and tomato sauce I thought it was only fair that I could add a couple of spoonfuls of Pesto sauce to intensify the flavour of the now quite diluted pasta sauce.

Dinner - Spaghetti and Tomato Sauce, with Broccoli
... and some sliced Chicken in Alan's portion.

Dinner was really tasty, and simple to do as adding the broccoli to the pasta water while the pasta was cooking made it quick, simple and very tasty … and of course one less pan to wash up which is always a bonus.

Tea - Puff Pastry Pasty

Made with just over a third of the ready rolled puff pastry sheet I bought from Aldi and filled with the leftover vegetables from the stew from Day One mixed with a couple of tablespoons of  lentil dhal, so a real mash up of my former meals.  It was very tasty as anything wrapped in pastry tends to be, and also very filling.  So much so that the third I couldn't manage will be my lunch tomorrow, along with a bit of leftover dhal and brown rice that I have still got in the fridge.

Food carried forward to the next day.

In the fridge:
1+1/2 portions lentil dhal
1 carrot
5 onions
1/2 sheet Puff Pastry
1/3 of a pasty
bowl of rice and dhal mix
3/4 head of broccoli
1 butternut squash
5 slices of lemon and little pot of juice

Other foods:
800g porridge oats
136g spaghetti
3 cloves garlic
2 potatoes
300g red lentils
900g brown rice
1 pack of stuffing mix
2 part-baked baguettes

Cash carried forward = -3p

So thanks to my little miscalculation I am 3p short for tomorrows shopping ... oops, but I think I'll manage  😃

  2. I do enjoy your challenges, you are inventive and resourceful which is something we should all try to be most of the time. It makes me realise how much we buy what we want and not what we need,we are so used to having treats as the norm that they aren't really treats any more, and I do so agree about food wrapped in pastry !

    1. Thank you, that's a lovely thing to say.

Taking time out from so called 'treats' is a good thing, and I think it makes me appreciate the food I do get much more.

    1. I think I prefer my pasties made with shortcrust pastry really. I'll think of something different to make with the rest of the pack.

  5. If you weren't doing it day by day, you wouldn't actually need to go shopping, sould you? There's loads left. So clever and creative.
