For the Price of a Coffee - Day One - The Meals

Breakfast - Porridge Oats with 1/2 a Banana.

Eaten whilst reading my free magazine.  The advert on the page I'm showing in the photo is kicking up a great hoo-ha all over social media at the moment, all because a little girl comes home and says she doesn't want to eat animals anymore and her Dad makes her a meat-free sausage casserole … literally what is wrong with some people!!

I weighed out my porridge to see how much I would get for 50g, I've done it before but I needed to get my eye in again.  It's quite a lot, I was over full after eating my breakfast (maybe it was those extra 7g) but it stopped me being hungry for a long time.

The makings of my Vegetable Stew.

Dinner - Vegetable Stew

Not bad considering I didn't have the Bouillon powder I would normally have used.  I may have over compensated with the dried herbs, they were almost going over into that soapy taste you get when you use too much rosemary, but all in all a pretty successful basic vegetable stew.

2 potatoes
2 onions
1 carrot
4 tiny cloves of garlic
mixed herbs
salt and pepper

Vegetables chopped, sautéed in oil, then flavourings added along with water.  Brought to the boil and then simmered for around 25 minutes.

The planned leftovers.

A good sized portion of soup for dinner tomorrow and some of the vegetables to be added to a pasty or pie.

The makings of my Tomato Pasta Sauce.

Tea - Spaghetti and Tomato Sauce.
With a planned second portion .

2 onions
3 cloves of garlic
1 can chopped tomatoes
mixed herbs
salt and pepper

I sautéed the chopped onion and garlic in some olive oil for a few minutes then added the tomatoes, herbs and seasonings.  Briefly brought to the boil and then simmered with the pan lid on for 30 minutes and then with it off for a further 10.  This reduces the sauce and thickens it nicely.

Served with 125g spaghetti ...
and very tasty.

Food carried forward to the next day.

In the fridge:
half a banana
1 large portion vegetable soup
1 portion of pasty/pie filling
1 portion of tomato pasta sauce
1 carrot
7 onions

(It's funny when I originally counted my onions after buying them I thought I had 10, then after using a definite 4 I counted them again and I had 7 … I've just figured out why I miscounted … when I'm counting them in the bag I instinctively pick one out and hold it in my right hand 🤣 )

Other Foods:
375g spaghetti
950g porridge oats
2 potatoes
5 cloves of garlic

Cash carried forward:  0

I think this is a really good starting point for tomorrows shopping, so I'm really pleased with this up to now.

  1. You do very well with your challenges indeed, just shows how we really don't need cupboards and fridges crammed with food, this is something we are working on, as the life we crave won't allow for this, I would rather shop a couple of times a week, then have the hoards like I have now.

    1. I don't like having lots of food in store anymore, it seems to end up as 'a collection of food' rather than a meal plan. I'm working to remedy this all the time by using up stores. This Challenge is like a little light relief from everything.

  4. A good days meals. Plenty of nutritional value to. Perhaps this us something we should all do from time to time. It would certainly get us back to basics.

    1. It does stop that mindless throwing things into the trolley mode that we can all get into if we're not careful. You stop thinking about 'treats' and start thinking more about value and nutrition.

  5. I guessed right about breakfast and dinner but I thought you'd makle a zizzed soup for lunch. It all looks very tasty!
