Yellow Sticker Challenge - Day Six

We took the dogs for a long walk on West Shore in Llandudno the other night and had to call at Tesco on the way home for some petrol for my car.  Well ... it would have been rude not to pop in and see what yellow stickers goodies were waiting for us ... wouldn't it  ;-)

Alan rummaged in the cheese tray.  Bits and bobs of cheese from the Deli counter are weighed out,  wrapped and put into a big tray on the reduced shelves every day.  He snaffled himself a little wedge of Wensleydale for 94p, only a 31p saving, but it all adds up.  Pity it's a white sticker rather than yellow ... but hey ho !

He also chose a pot of this puree type thing.

It's almost a hummus texture, but the flavour was not to my liking at all too lemony/vinegary.  I don't like tangy foods.  He's made good use of it though having dollops on lots of his meals since buying the pot.

Something I did like were these cinnamon and raisin bagels.  These have kept us in tasty breakfasts for a couple of days, and were a bargain at just 65p.  With my homemade orange marmalade they are delicious.

Something else we both enjoyed was this baguette for just 49p.  We didn't notice at first that it was a Salt and Black Pepper baguette and was very peppery.

But it went wonderfully with the Mixed Vegetable Masala I showed yesterday and saved me from having to cook any rice.  Yes ... I tore it up instead of slicing it neatly, I'm a messy sod  ;-)

So for a last minute dash in and grab some bargains type of shop we did pretty well.  It wasn't a big saving, but it was money off, and the things we managed to get complimented other things we had already purchased and everything was very tasty - so a good result!!

Figures

Spent in Tesco  £2.78    Original Price  £4.30    Saving me £1.52

  1. A very good result and it's nice when it's unexpected, isn't it?

  2. We are newcomers to your part of the world and are enjoying taking trips out and exploring. Do you have any recommendations of places to visit for a stroll around then for lunch? Nothing fancy, just a £10 a head lunch. We've been to Rhos on Sea and ate fish and chips, it was OK but not wonderful. We've had 4 lunches in Llandudno and only found 1 place that we'd go back to, Providero and M&S café of course but both of these are often full, is there anywhere else that you can suggest?

    1. Excellent fish and chip lunches at Pebble in Llandudno, the Special 'fish, chips peas bread and butter' along with drinks comes in at less then £20 in total for two people sitting in.

The food is almost as good at their neighbours Barnacles, where there is an extensive vegetarian and vegan menu.

If you want to travel to Betws Y Coed, I would highly recommend The Stables. With inside and outside dining it's a lovely pub attached to the Royal Oak Hotel, dogs are very welcome outside, where there are large umbrellas and outdoor heating.

Obviously Betws is a wonderful area for walking around, lots of easy walks and many longer more 'walking boot walks' and has a pleasant few shops for browsing and getting a coffee.

On your way through to Betws you would pass the famous Llanrwst tearooms, which is just about to re-open midweek for the season, currently just open at weekends. Gorgeous food in unique surrounding and the River Conwy to walk along afterwards. We love it and yes, you would get a good lunch for £20 for 2.

If you want a treat, Osborne's in Llandudno is a favourite place for us and John Gray for a nice meal, but it would probably be a little more than £20 for two!! It's just set back from the promenade opposite the end of the pier.

A little tip if we're out and about shopping we prefer to have a coffee at Waterstones rather than M&S, it's usually not so full, as a lot of visitors don't realise the upstairs cafe is even there. It has a really nice atmosphere ... and of course there are BOOKS :-)

      Hope this helps.

    2. WOW ... that was long!! AND I forgot to mention Bodnant, just 3 miles away from us, both the Bodnant Gardens and Bodnant Food have wonderful places to eat and are just a mile apart on the main A470.

    3. We always go to Barnacles when in Llandudno! Was one of the first places we could get vegan food in the town before it became super trendy and popular like it is now!

  3. Well done. You are nearly at the end of the week.
I would find it difficult going into shops and only buying yellow stickered food.
Have you bought anything else this week?
I've written several comments lately but am having difficulty posting them.
I've tried altering the settings on my account but it seems to be random as to whether the blog accepts them.
    Any suggestions? Sue

    1. Yes, we have bought other foods this week along with the YS items. Milk for Alan for instance and some dairy free chocolate bars for me, but the majority of what we have eaten has been the YS food.

There are no problems with comments on the blog at this end at the moment that I can find, and lots of comments are obviously getting through every day. Hope it's a fault you can work out. Technology eh ... it's great when it works, and bloody annoying when it goes wrong :-(

    2. Thanks Sue.
      I'll keep trying.
At the moment it's very long winded but I’ll persevere because I love the blogs I read and commenting seems the least I can do. Sue

  4. Hi Sue

Thank you for the comprehensive suggestions! Our new-to-us cottage is on the hills above Llanrwst and on one of our MANY house viewing trips over an 18 month period we had lunch at the 'hairy house' as we call the tearoom in Llanrwst and dined in the actual fireplace. I think that this was also the day that we had to reverse back off the old bridge too (tense!!!). We'll have fun trying out all your other suggestions, they all sound great, thank you for your hard work.
PS, I always look out for your buoy as we go past your homestead, I can't believe its still there.

    1. Haha ... I've never heard it called the 'hairy house' before, it's the reversing off the bridge that's hairy in my opinion. Another place that's good for coffee and a decent meal for under £20 is Debenhams in Llandudno, we also used to have breakfast there quite regularly. AND Snowdonia Nurseries in Glan Conwy have a lovely restaurant, well worth stopping if your heading towards Llandudno.

Oh the buoy is hung on baler twine it will probably outlive us all ;-)

Our evening meal today is 4 chicken mini fillets southern fried from co-op £3 reduced to 75p 305g, roast med veg from Tesco £1.50 reduced to 38p 475g, buttered herb new potatoes from coop £1 reduced to 20p 306g..... Total cost for our 2 meals £1.33
It will all cook in the oven together xx

    1. We hadn't even noticed it WAS a salt and pepper baguette until we were each munching on a piece on the drive home and realised our mouths were getting very tingly!!

    2. I've only had salt and pepper bread once and it was too salty for my taste. Can't remember where I bought it!

    3. I don't think I would buy it again (unless it was a YS bargain) it was VERY peppery and salty. Perhaps it would be okay eaten with a bland soup ... I might try that if I ever get another one.

  7. I really like the pea and spinach puree and use it with salad. I would have snaffled the bagels as well-I like mine with cream cheese.

    1. Alan loved it, he literally has had a dollop on everything he has eaten recently. I think I'll have a go at making some then I could make it less tangy and more to my taste.
