Freebies, Vouchers and Coupons - Day Four

You never know where you are going to spot a good offer.

Alan's Saturday morning paper gave me the chance to pick up this one a couple of weeks ago.

When I spotted the voucher I quickly Googled how close we were to a Laura Ashley store and when it turned out there was one on the way to our planned day out, we detoured, had a little browse around the store and picked up my free shopping bag.  There was no pressure off the staff to buy anything, just a friendly bit of banter at the till and we were on our way.

These came through my door a couple of weeks ago, the vouchers we get for using our Marks and Spencer credit card.  We've had a few large purchases recently, all paid for on the card and then the amount owed being paid off in full using our savings at the end of each month.  It gives you something for nothing.

Instead of just dashing out and spending them, I saved them until I could think what we needed.

Then yesterday Alan said he fancied salmon for Christmas rather than lots of meat ... he's winding down his consumption ready for joining in with Veganuary in the New Year.  So I bought two freezer packs of salmon fillets as they were on offer at £11 each instead of the usual £13.  So with my £19 of vouchers I only had to pay £3 ... bargain.

So it pays to always be on the lookout for freebies in unusual places, and to hang on to any money saving vouchers or coupons until you decide what you really want to buy with them and if you can, until the items you decide to buy are on an additional offer ... this way you get much more value for your coupons or vouchers.

  1. It's nice that vouchers can be for healthy food rather than just the 'popular' fat and sugar laden stuff.

    1. Definitely ... I have noticed that most specific vouchers and coupons are for processed foods and junk foods, I suppose they want to get us hooked with a freebie so we will buy in the future ... it doesn't work with me, I take the freebie and run ;-)

  2. I need to get better at looking for coupons. I no longer buy magazines or papers, but I suppose there's always the free mags in the supermarkets - I never think of looking for those.

    1. Last months Tesco in-store magazine was worth picking up. It had a voucher for a free multi-pack of Walkers baked crisps. But lots of folk got wise to this fact and picked up lots of copies so the magazines soon ran out. Even if you don't eat any of the free products yourself they can always be popped into the Foodbank trolley on your way out.

  3. My daughter and I got those bags from Laura Ashley too as we have a store quite near by. Lovely to get freebies.

    1. It is isn't it :-)

These bags are great to keep in the door pocket of the car too as they fold up so small.

  4. I pay for everything I can with my credit card and then pay it in full each month. I get 1.5% back in cash or travel miles which to me is definitely free money since I am not paying any interest.

    1. Brilliant, we do the same with our M&S card, but instead of cash we get the vouchers. I used to have a cash back card but cancelled that a long time ago now. As long as you are strict and pay the amount owed in full each month it's very sensible to use credit cards with incentive schemes. We chose the M&S card over the cash back one as we have such a high spending limit on it and can use it for large purchases, such as my car last year.

  5. I've been watching "Extreme Couponing" on some free view channel or other at my friend's house. It's bonkers, I love it. I'm wondering how many coupons I encounter in any given day that I just don't bother to take advantage of...
